After 3 years on campus, I’ve learned an incredibly fun way to make friends. With an international student population of nearly 1,000 students (20% of the student population), the easiest way to make friends is very simple: learn a few phrases of a foreign language.
You don’t need to become fluent in another language to achieve this! I’ve witnessed domestic students impress international students simply by introducing themselves. For many international students, this may be the first time hearing a foreign accent of their native language. This is likely to bring a giant smile to the face of your potential new friend!
Here is a short and simplified list of phrases you should keep an ear open for while on campus and maybe even try to say yourself!
Arabic: A good choice for any Mechanical or Petroleum Engineers. Very easy to make Saudi Arabian and Omanian friends
“Salaam alaykum” – “Peace be upon you” is a standard greeting often shortened to just “Salaam!”
“Kayfa haalak” – “How are you?”
